Climate Companion Card and Foreign Nationals

The Climate Companion Card is an integrated public transportation pass introduced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, allowing unlimited use of subways, buses, and the public bicycle system, Ttareungi, for a specified period. This card has gained significant popularity among foreign tourists visiting Seoul. This article provides information on how foreigners can utilize the Climate Companion Card, including its types, purchasing methods, and usage considerations.​

 

 

1. Types and Prices of Climate Companion Cards for Foreigners

For foreign tourists, various short-term passes are available, including 1-day, 2-day, 3-day, 5-day, and 7-day options. The prices for each are as follows:​

• 1-day pass: KRW 5,000
• 2-day pass: KRW 8,000
• 3-day pass: KRW 10,000
• 5-day pass: KRW 15,000
• 7-day pass: KRW 20,000​

These short-term passes offer an economical and convenient transportation option for tourists visiting Seoul for a limited time. ​

 

2. Purchasing and Charging the Climate Companion Card

Foreigners can purchase the Climate Companion Card at customer safety zones within Seoul subway stations or nearby convenience stores such as GS25, CU, and 7-Eleven. A deposit of KRW 3,000 is required when purchasing the card, which is non-refundable upon return. Charging can be done at unmanned charging machines within subway stations using cash or domestically issued credit cards. ​

 

 

3. Important Considerations When Using the Climate Companion Card

The Climate Companion Card allows unlimited use on Seoul subways and city-licensed buses but is not valid on certain lines such as the Shinbundang Line, intercity buses, and airport buses. Additionally, subway usage is limited to within Seoul; traveling beyond this area may incur additional charges. Therefore, it's crucial to verify the valid routes before use. 

 

4. Using the Climate Companion Card in Conjunction with Seoul’s Public Bike, Ttareungi

The Climate Companion Card can also be used to access Ttareungi, Seoul’s public bicycle service. To use this benefit, users must first register on the T-money Card & Pay website, link their Climate Companion Card, and then activate the two-hour Ttareungi pass by entering the card number in the T-money GO mobile app.

However, it’s important to note that using Ttareungi requires identity verification through a Korean authentication method such as I-PIN. Therefore, foreign nationals should be aware that access to this service may be limited if they cannot complete the required verification process.
